Users Stopping Slimming Jabs Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a leading health publication points out that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals using these treatments need to be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.

The struggle is worsened if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle changes.
