Paceman Atkinson Adds to England's Injury Concerns.

'Serious blow' for England as Atkinson leaves the field with a hamstring injury.

Gus Atkinson added to England's injury problems when he left the field early on day two in the Melbourne Test in the Ashes series.

The pace bowler experienced discomfort in his left hamstring after the final ball that he bowled on Saturday.

Team management indicated the 27-year-old had experienced "tightness" and required time on the sidelines to undergo evaluation "during the day".

The final Test of the series in Sydney gets underway on Sunday, 4 January.

The English side has already lost strike bowlers Mark Wood with a knee problem and Jofra Archer to a side strain on this Ashes tour.

Matthew Fisher was brought into the squad to provide backup.

His form was underwhelming early in the series, managing only three wickets.

He was omitted of the third Test, then recalled for the Melbourne Test to fill the void.

The county bowler showed better form in Melbourne, taking two wickets in Australia's first innings, then making 28 as a batsman among just a trio of teammates who passed ten runs.

Post a single over late on the first day, he resumed for the second day's play and removed Scott Boland Scott Boland caught behind.

Yet, at the end of his spell, he delivered a change of pace to the batsman and immediately felt for his hamstring.

Atkinson returned to the side for the Boxing Day Test having missed the Adelaide game.
