Our Diamond Family Alternative Video Game of the Year Roundup for This Year
Well, how was 2025 in your family? Did it seem truly wonderful as you pretended on Facebook? Full of A-grades for your offspring and wild costume celebrations for the parents? Maybe it felt like a ocean of disappointment with only rare enjoyable flotsam? And was any of it genuine, or is everyone now seven-fingered virtual entities with perfect dental work?
I have gathered everyone for a reflection, whether they wanted to or not, to discuss the most important thing in a calendar year: which releases we played the most. Without further ado:
Game First Daughter Played the Most
Just Dance 2024
"Why can't you pick just one?"
"You can't expect my personal ranking."
In the mobile realm, her go-to has been Cityscapes and "trying to find adequate healthcare."
"Virtually?"
"In reality."
Game Second Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I don’t play games on my phone." He seemed insulted that the question was posed. Point taken.
Release Third Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
She's attempting to get into drama school, but when she wasn’t singing, she was tackling Resident Evil. She also went on in great detail about her achievements on The Sims, where the Shark has a thriving utopia with infinitely better healthcare than her older sibling has outside the game.
Release the Spouse Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She began the year at sixty percent completion and finished the year at 82%. She's in it for the long run not a sprint for her. Her phone game: something called Woodle, where you have to extract pins.
Game I Teased My Kids About My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Any time I see my 21-year-old son playing Minecraft, I set about him like a cross between a classic comedy bit. When he objects, I reply that I am behaving this way to toughen him up so he can grow up and play games for mature audiences. It’s a very Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Impressive Gaming Family Member of the Year
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
She was the clear winner for this one. She is incredible. Even better than I was at classic rhythm games in my prime.
Game I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
Nothing came close to the hours I spent on this insanely well-crafted strategy competitive game, with its constantly evolving range of cards and game variations.
Title I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The worst thing about games that frequently update their range is you wake up one day and understand it is all just an attempt to trap you with compulsion-based microtransactions. So love turned to hate halfway through the year and it went into the bin.
Game I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Glorious reinvention of a iconic franchise. Immersive atmosphere from the off. I wish I could eviscerate my problems so effectively in real life.
Game I Wish I Had Played More (Cerebral Edition)
Blue Prince
I decline to rush this stunning, original game and I just didn’t have the mental bandwidth to give it what it deserved earlier this year. With relatives staying over the festive period, I aim to experience this in the late night after appropriate hospitality.
Game That Saved My Soul When I Needed It
Balatro
I'm aware Balatro was last year's breakout game, but I was slow on the uptake. And it is incredible. It just gets every single thing right. Crazy Poker is a fantastic concept, but the effects behind the different special cards are so creative it has become a game I would happily play at any hour. Throw in the cleverness of the card design, and this is an true high-water mark of gaming. I wouldn't mind being stuck in a broken-down lift for hours just so I have the perfect excuse but play it.
Game I Got the Most Criticism For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I endured a bit of backlash when I wrote about how a glitch in another game soured the experience for me, but that other title is still a massive gaming achievement in terms of art, sound, acting – which I appreciated even more after playing Outer Worlds 2. So thank you to the commenter who took the time to write in to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "bitter, confused resentment". I present that verbatim, because I acknowledge the engagement, and she is obviously an sharp judge of character.
Title Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Fine. Give me a bastard-hard non-linear thing and don’t tell me guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "explore". What a joy. I understand that it is beautiful and is ideal if you are into the genre, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I desire less in my current stage of life. I was around back when many games were like this, and I'm over it. It was fine when I was a kid, but so was many questionable things.
Biggest Gaming Controversy of 2025
Debate between business deals that caused concern, and expensive game releases. Both difficult to justify and unpleasant.
Games I Would Name My Children After, If I Was Ever Foolish Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all be unique names shouted from the back door at tea time.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. No joke. I don’t know if it’s because of video games or phone use, but it aches like anything in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs protected back in the 90s.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to stretch time until the end of days.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
