Larian Studios Unveil a New Divinity, Calling it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The anticipation about this year's gaming ceremony was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The question has been revealed. Larian Studios is creating a fresh Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer featuring striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio clarified that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This phrasing implies that the team might be building a faster-paced experience instead of another turn-based title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a announcement clip is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it pioneered the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, player agency, and deep class systems—traits that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities only possible if you're playing as a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously permissive, enabling players to experiment both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can look forward to more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
