Israelis have come together throughout the country to mark two years since the Hamas-led assault on October 7th, 2023, as discussions proceeded in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the war in Gaza.

The attack saw more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken back to Gaza as captives. It was the most most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.

Israel answered by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are seen as reliable by the United Nations and other international bodies.

"The aggressive opponents have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister added on that day.

He also pledged to "achieve all the goals of the war: the release of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will no longer pose a threat to Israel".

Commemorative Events Across Israel

The government authorities postponed official remembrance events until October 16th - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still took place throughout the country on Tuesday.

A remembrance service for the relatives of people killed in the Hamas attack was held in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was televised across Israeli TV networks.

Hours earlier, a silent tribute was observed throughout the country.

Peace Meetings in Egypt

Simultaneously, both sides' representatives convened in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to discuss the terms of the agreement.

A senior delegate involved in the negotiations revealed that an late session of indirect talks commenced at evening in Egypt.

The source explained the morning session ended without significant progress, due to disagreements over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not restart hostilities after the initial stage of the deal.

He commented that the discussions are "challenging and have not yet produce any major advancement," but mentioned that facilitators are striving to reduce the differences between the conflicting groups.

Essential Issues in Talks

  • A lasting ceasefire
  • The swap of the captives still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The removal of troops from Gaza
  • Plans for assistance distribution
  • After-conflict administration of the region

Public Sentiment

In the city's memorial area earlier, 29-year-old a woman - whose brother endured the incident on the outdoor event, where many attendees were killed and many more were abducted by Hamas fighters - explained: "Nowhere appears as home now and until all the hostages are released no one will have peace of mind."

"After we see all home again, we can breathe again. Then we can begin to recover," she concluded.

Near the prime minister's residence in Jerusalem, people gathered to show their solidarity for the relatives of the captives. Israel states forty-eight remain in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be living.

Activist Atalia Regev explained: "We need do whatever arrangement needed for the captives to return. But we sincerely need promises that we will be secure."

Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that approximately the majority of Israelis desire the war to conclude in return for the release of the abducted.

Palestinian Conditions

At the area of Nova festival, mourners gathered to remember the victims.

From there, the sound of aerial bombardments and artillery could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers said the heavy Israeli attacks continued.

In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were noted in the morning of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, Rimal and locality districts and in the eastern area of the community, as well the camp to the northwest.

"When the night comes, the anxiety arrives with it," evacuated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike previously, explained.

"We are terrified of the bombings. During nighttime we are resting together, embracing, especially my smallest child who places his head on me throughout the night."

"Continuously we check the updates to see developments. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the war will return to us."

Medical Emergency

The medical facility in Gaza City said it had received the remains of half dozen people by the daytime, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the southern district.

Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of the city said two more victims had been delivered. One of them was lost his life by Israeli forces while attempting to get aid to the south region, medical staff said.

The region's health ministry said 25 of the {territ
